Several International days commemorating important events and issues of public importance are observed. Events such as awareness programs, health camps, academic deliberations and guest lectures are organised to mark such days. This serves the purpose of sensitising the public, focussing attention on critical issues and garnering support for important causes.
Health awareness broadcasts in audiovisual media
Health professionals of the constituent colleges of NITTE participate in Television and Radio broadcasts aimed at creating awareness about health issues of public importance. These programs are produced in local languages and a variety of topics are covered in a series of weekly broadcasts. The programs include question-answer sessions and audience phone in segments.

Each year thousands of people suffer cardiac arrests - cessation of heart beat. Early recognition and quick first aid measures can save several lives. NITTE took up a major campaign to create awareness about emergency life saving measures amongst students and faculty of NITTE institutions. Volunteers were trained in identifying victims of cardiac arrest and performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation - measures to support breathing and pumping by the heart until medical assistance becomes available. Teams of doctors conducted training programmes with help of manikins. More than 5000 students and faculty have been trained in CPR - Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.
Exposure to excessively loud sounds can lead to impairment in hearing over a period of time. Such noise induced hearing loss is one of the commonest occupational health hazards. Noise levels in Indian cities is high and several groups of people like drivers, traffic police and factory workers are at high risk of developing hearing impairment due to exposure at work place. This devastating disability is entirely preventable by some simple preventive measures.
Nishabda (sanskrit word for silence) is a project co-ordinated by the Department of ENT, K.S. Hegde Medical Academy since 2000. The objectives of the project are to create awareness about noise pollution and the evaluation of hearing assessment in persons at high risk for noise induced hearing deficits.
Activities include awareness programs for school children, screening for hearing impairment in traffic police, drivers and others with occupational exposure to high levels of noise.
